USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

  • Buy it only once
  • Reuseable and sustainable
  • Super easy

  • Want a larger one
  • Warps if left wet

Best Uses

I wasn't sure this would work, but I was planting 60+ seeds and didn't want to buy all the little peat starters. I wanted something a bit bigger. This did the trick. Very easy to use. It took 2 or 3 trys to get my technique down...but then I was a pot making machine. Only problem was I left it on the garden bench and it rained. It is now warped and I need to get a new one. But...I know where to get it!

    Neat Tool

    • Compact
    • Simple

      Best Uses

It is incredibly easy to use. First, you cut strips of paper into 3.5" x 10" strips, wrap the strip length-wise around the stamp, fold the bottom edge of the paper under the stamp and then press into the base. Voila! A perfectly sized seedling pot.

It took me about 30 minutes to fill 5 trays with little paper pots which was worth it due to the amount of money I'll save over the years. You can also transfer the little pots directly into the garden once you're ready to plant them outside.

It takes a little longer to fill with soil so if you're going for a world record in speed gardening, this probably isn't the tool for you.

        Q & A

        Plant With These:

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
