A must-have for all meadows, a field of Lupine creates an amazing spectacle in the late spring and summer. We like to combine them with later-blooming flowers for an extended season of color. Growing to be about 12-36” tall, Lupine can be planted at the front of the meadow or in the garden bed. Lupine is extremely easy to grow, deer resistant and blooms year after year. All of the seed we handle at American Meadows is non-GMO, neonicotinoid-free and guaranteed to grow. Perennial.

Plant Information

Two of the major wild perennial lupine species of North America are now hopelessly crossed and confused by almost every seed grower. L. perennis, the basic blue wild species has been mixed with the taller L. polyphyllus (originally from the Pacific northwest and also blue) which was used years ago to make the famous “Russell Hybrid Lupines” in reds, yellows, and bicolors. So today, what you plant should be mostly blue, but may show some breaks to the other colors, adding a rainbow to your meadow. The blue-flowered plants are always the most permanent.

Seeds seem to be slow starting, I am hoping that the plants will be bigger next year, and bloom! Had to transplant from seed trays, direct sow in best.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

Two autumns ago, I found a bag of these that I had ordered the year before. I threw a bunch of seeds in bare patches of earth where I was planting alliums, and then I forgot I did so. Last summer, a few leaves poked through, and this spring, there were masses of lupines among the alliums. They made a beautiful combination and a great surprise, since I had forgotten that I put the seed down. I did absolutely nothing special with them - no nicking, no soaking, no nothing. They are tall and magnificent.

I'm restoring about 15 acres of pre-settlement prairie and have used American Meadows for much of it....good prices are an incentive, but more importantly, the quality is excellent. This year I have the first blooms....lupines and many others coloring the front field for the first time. I'm so glad that I found American Meadows....good on-line advice and GREAT service!!! Looking forward to seeing it develop and become more beautiful year after year!

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

I ordered perennial lupine after using American Meadows' Texas bluebonnet seeds (a short annual variety) and discovering that I liked lupines. I wanted taller heights and returning plants in a section of garden that I hope will be self-sustaining and low-maintenance for many years to come. Having used Texas bluebonnet and having learned that lupine seeds have hard outer shells that sometimes require nicking or soaking in water to facilitate germination, I was uncertain. So, I tested some in peat pellets in a covered Jiffy flat. I sowed some without doing anything special. I used nail clippers to scar/nick the shells of some, and I soaked some in water overnight prior to planting. My poorest results resulted from nicking/scarring the seeds (I presume I nicked too much of the outer shell). I saw no real difference between germination rates for seeds soaked in water and others sown without special preparation. These seeds simply take longer to germinate than many others. It took about 2 weeks for the first sprout to appear in peat pellets. With time more appeared. I have transplanted seedlings into the garden, I have planted seeds pre-soaked in water, and I have strewn unprepared seeds in soil during spring 2013. The plants are coming along nicely, and I really like the multi-petaled foliage. I do not expect blooms on this perennial until 2014. Therefore, I cannot comment on my overall satisfaction. This is the only reason I give it 4 stars now.

I've had good luck with lupines, with all of them growing quickly, developing beautiful flowers, and spreading quickly; and these were no exception. My only gripe is a little color variation with these lupines, with some of the blooms being pink instead of the purple.

I did a review on these a few years back. The meadow is in its 3rd season, and is amazing everyone who sees it. I travel ALOT and the area gets little care or attention, yet it is stunning to witness the sea of blue it has become. Be patient...and do not worry, you will not be disappointed.

Located in Northeast Massachusetts. Had a few lupines from years ago from a wild flower mixture from [@], of all places, and the few lupines that took hold would seed a few new plants each year. Last year apparently a lot of seeds took hold and I suddenly had a ton of them; I decided the whole septic field would look good in lupines. Bought 1lb. Planted mid-late spring with the ground damp and cold from recent snow melt. Not a single one of them grew. Not one. Out of 26,000. I am a novice. Pre-novice would be more descriptive.

We used the seeds in hotel guest bag for a wedding held in June at the Mountain View Grand. The lupine are in season then and it was a perfect reminder of the weekend for guests. Hopefully, lots of them will get planted!

While Lupine are sometimes hard to get started, the native variety of blue lupine such as these do well if the soil is not too rich and they get water and sun. We have them now established in masses along our stream, and they self seed and spread further each season. Great for naturalized meadow gardens and in beds for June flowers.

I planted these seeds directly in my garden in several different areas in the spring of '09. It is now almost summer '11 and ONE flower has bloomed out of the pound of seeds I bought. The foliage is doing great, and I thinned them out as directed. I am really hoping I get better blooms next year.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Lupine Seeds:

I live in Zone 7 (Texas) where it is very dry. I just installed a drip irrigation system, so that may also be responsible for the success I have had with the perennial Lupine seeds. I soaked the seeds in a glass of water for 24-48 hours and then just scattered them on the ground in my flowerbed in April. Then I walked over the seeds to press them into the ground. With the drip irrigation system watering each night (I have an entirely new flowerbed), the lupine seeds began sprouting almost immediately. One month later and the plants are about 4 inches high. The germination rate was great. I think every single seed (or almost every one) sprouted, even the ones stuck to my shoe and transferred to other parts of the garden. I can't wait to see them bloom next year.

These have done extremely well in my wildflower field. They bloom beautifully and are faithfully spreading every year from the first 1/2 lb. I spread.

                                                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
