Whatever you call it, you'll love it in your garden. Its a shade plant that demands moisture, but good drainage. The stems rise about waist high, and open vivid blue flower clusters that are rounded or globe-like, something like an Allium, but with a looser, softer look. Full bloom happens in mid and late summer. This plant is native to South Africa, so can take plenty of heat, as long as it has some shade and plenty of moisture.

About Me Professional Landscaper
Comments about African Lily:
This is an amazing plant given the proper environment. In California and Hawaii this is a go to choice for long bordersor in large pots. It must have loose reasonably neutral 7.5 to acid 6.5 soil. Snails will walk a mile for this plant...they can hide deep in the leaves or under them. Ph is critical for most plants. Agapanthus will not do well in clay or alkaline soil. I think Allium is a better choice for colder zones.Very similar in appearance.
Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

I love these!
from Bluffton, Indiana
I got these to use in pots - as I have had some in the ground(not from American Meadows)....One of the 3 bloomed this year, but they were just getting started...I'll store them - in the pot - in my heated basement this winter....and hopefully another year of root growth will make them be more prolific next summer.

Great Customer Service!
from Oklahoma City
I ordered a packet of three African Lilies. One of the plants didn't survive, and the other two did poorly. I reported this to American Meadows, and they refunded the purchase immediately. I will definitely do business with them again!
from Westlake Village, CA
I usually buy my plants, bulbs, rhizomes, and seeds through online shopping. I bought two pkgs. of these agapanthus and they have been great as container plants. I have them in either side of a bench under a shade tree in my backyard. As long as it has taken for them to sprout and grow, it has been a sheer delight to watch and anticipate the blossoms. These plants are some of my favorites and perfect for our Southern California weather.
from Boynton Beach, Florida
I leave in South Florida ( Z-10),I have two of them, keep the flowers for long time, just water and fertilizer, sandy soil, mulch, partial shade, a lot of heat, a new season start,(March) and I change the plants about 4 feet of the original location, responding very well,no signs of stress...I will buy more, those two were an experiment in my garden..works perfect...very little maintenance, no worries....
Too soon to tell
from Upstate, NY
Only got a few inches of foliage and no flowers the first year. Maybe next year?
from New Jersey
I have had good bulbs in thae past from American Meadows. There were not! I have tried 2 years in a row with very skimpy growth, no flowers, and some no growth at all.
Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Got two leaves only
from Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts
I planted nine of these in different locations. All had ample filtered light and water and good soil. None of them produced more than two leaves. Anyone else have this experience this summer?
