One expert calls Artemisia (or Dusty Miller) the Gardeners Dream Plant. Its great value is its feathery foliage that adds a lovely gray-green to the garden. Partnered with red-leaved plants or bright blooms, the combinations are spectacular.

Perennial Dusty Miller needs sharp-draining soil, and is very heat tolerant.

Comments about American Meadows Artemisia Silver Brocade:

I received 3 plants, and unfortunately, only one thrived in the area in which I planted them. While 2 died quickly, one really took off and filled an area in which I needed some color differentiation - it did a good job of that. Hopefully I can get it to spread a bit more next season.

Comments about American Meadows Artemisia Silver Brocade:

I had great success with this artemesia at our previous house, just 3 miles from our current address. However, the previous plants were not mail order. These all died within a few months, conditions were as needed. I did receive a refund.

Comments about American Meadows Artemisia Silver Brocade:

This is a great plant if you want something that will spill over the edge of a raised bed or border. Its low profile and silvery foliage do indeed set off the profile of surrounding plants. I wasn't sure when it arrived if it was going to survive. There were just a couple shriveled leaves and it looked dead/sickly. I stuck it in the ground anyways knowing that I could get a refund if it didn't make it. Within the first week it had put out leaves and just kept growing from there.

This is a slow growing plant compared to many other (often invasive) ground covers, so I don't think I'll have to worry about it getting out of hand. It did completely shrivel up on me after several weeks of rainy/humid weather mid-summer, so it definitely prefers dryer conditions. However, once we had some sunny dry days, it put out fresh leaves and kept on going.

It did bloom for a short time, but the pale yellow flowers disappear against the grey-green foliage.

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
