Bring color into the shade garden with beautiful Astilbe
Astilbes are one of the top shade perennials for a colorful display under trees or in shady spots in the border. These neat perennial plants make lovely foliage, and in late spring, send up plume-like flowers in a host of rich glowing colors. Perennial astilbes come in various heights, so plant several levels for a multicolor perennial display.
Along with hostas, astilbes create permanent beds around trees, in front of shaded foundation plants, or in any other moist, shaded spots. As a bonus, they also add elegant plumes of color in any cutflower arrangement. Enjoy!
Deutschland’s pure white plumes illuminate the shade garden. This favorite Astilbe gets its name from Germany, where it was hybridized. Try pairing with any fern for a gorgeous, contrasting look. (Astilbe japonica) Learn More →

For lavender-pink blooms in shady gardens, ‘Maggie Daley’ astilbe is at the top of the list. Slightly more tolerant of dry soils than other astilbes, it’s still at its best in a moist location. Mid-summer blooms are held in dense panicles and will dry in place for fall interest. Pinnate, deep green foliage. Clump forming. (Astilbe chinensis ‘Maggie Daley’)
