This delightful fern produces pink fiddleheads that evolve into copper-orange as they open. As the season progresses, the fronds turn to dark green and stay green into the winter months. A must-have for any shady spot. (Dryopteris erythrosora)

Plant Information

A native of China and Japan, Autumn Fern is a close relative of many of our North American natives. However, it is one of the few ferns which show a color change by season. In spring, the unfurling fronds are coppery pink and yellow, then green in summer, then rusty brown in autumn. For even more color, spore cases, which form on the reverse of the fronds, are bright red.

Autumn Fern is a most interesting plant for home gardens in partial or full shade. Only normal moisture is necessary.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
