Description
Easy-to-grow Balloon Flowers were one of grandmothers favorites. The Platycodons have been around forever, and some of their biggest fans are children. They love to watch the balloons form (the buds) and then swell each day until suddenly, one special day, the pop open. These beautiful old-fashioned flowers are lovely in the garden and fine in the vase.

      My balloon flowers are planted in a rock garden area in full sun bordering a walkway, with a drip line, and seem to tolerate the area nicely. The roots look hopeless on arrival, but plant them anyway - they do sprout mostly. Once up they grow fairly rapidly, making about 8" the first season. Like many perennials, they need 3 seasons or more to reach full size. The flowers are silver-dollar sized, with beautiful coloring, and each bloom lasts for 2 weeks or so, making for a long bloom season. They turn heads. I'm happy with them in my location - Beautiful!

                  These plants just keep coming back. I live in upstate NY and our winters can be harsh. I don't water much after plants are set in to save on water bills. Everything has to make it on it's on. These plants have done very well.
