Plant Information

This is the famous American wildflower with the bright red crown-shaped flowers, a description of the large scarlet blooms everyone and every hummingbird loves. Native from the far north all the way south to Georgia, it was first discovered by world famous plant explorer John Bartram during the colonial era. Since its a member of the mint family with fragrant foliage, Bee Balm was always a medicinal plant of the native Americans, and today adds wonderful color to perennial gardens and wildflower meadows. Its a strong-growing perennial that likes moisture, and will grow in sun or partial shade.

Jacob Kline is not a man-made hybrid, but a natural selection of wild bee balm, now famous for its mildew-resistance. Like well-known Phlox David this Bee Balm is the mildew-resistant champ in a sea of mildew-prone plants. If you've new to bee balm, you'll quickly learn that most of them are mildew prone, just like most garden Phlox. All that means is that you have to spray them with fungicide beginning in June. But with Jacob Kline, if you plan for good air circulation around your Bee Balm, you may have no mildew at all. Just a big clump of bright red-blooming flowers.

As with all Bee Balms, the bloom begins in mid-summer, and if you cut off spent flowers for about three weeks, you'll extend the blooming into fall.

I ordered two bee balm plants that were planted in different beds 12 feet apart but in the same sunlight conditions. Neither plant did very well. Susceptible to pest damage. Not prolific bloomers. Much less hearty than the established bee balm plant that I had growing in a shaded bed. Maybe next year will be a different story. Can't recommend based on this year's performance.

South Georgia, mostly sunnu location. Plants grew slowly and after 5 months are only about 18" tall. They have developed several more stems which are healthy. One out of 2 plants flowered.

I bought these last year. One bloomed that year. The second was planted in dry spot and almost died. I was able to move it and it is getting ready to bloom this year. These are fairly thirsty plants and need shade. These are getting ready to bloom in the first week of June. Looks like there will be seven blooms in total

I got to two of these. One bloomed and grew about two and half feet and is showing new growth at the base. The second one I did not plant in a good spot and did not grow very well. Looks like it is best to plant them where they get the morning and afternoon sun and then shade for the rest of the day. I moved the second one it has recovered and is showing new growth. Need to keep them moist.

I purchased the Bee Balm to attract Hummingbirds but never thinking they would bloom this year. Well they have not only bloomed but have helped keep Hummingbirds in my yard till the last week of September. Very hardly and a no maintenance plant. I will be planting more.

This is a wonderful addition to any garden! Saw many a butterfly hover at this plant, as well as actually seeing several hummingbirds flitting around it. I ordered several of these. I will order more in the next few years. I didn't place them together, and probably should have, but this is a plant I would recommend! The bloom color is very vibrant and I got many a comment on them last year when they were showing their colors!

I purchased 3 for 3 extra large pots. They did well last year, but this year, Oh My! The pots are full and they are already almost 3' tall. I can not wait for the blooms. I know the hummingbirds are going to love them as much as I do!

                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
