Plant Information

About the Monardas This is a hybrid of the famous American wildflower with the bright red crown-shaped flowers, a description of the large scarlet blooms everyone and every hummingbird loves.

There are other species, but our famous Monarda or Bee Balm is native from the far north all the way south to Georgia, it was first discovered by world famous plant explorer John Bartram during the colonial era. Since its a member of the mint family with fragrant foliage, Bee Balm was always a medicinal plant of the native Americans, and today adds wonderful color to perennial gardens and wildflower meadows. Its a strong-growing perennial that likes moisture, and will grow in sun or partial shade.

As with all Bee Balms, the bloom begins in mid-summer, and if you cut off spent flowers for about three weeks, you'll extend the blooming into fall.

Comments about American Meadows Bee Balm Petite Delight:

Was very disappointed with this flower. Arrived very small - it was only 1/4 inch in size. Grew to its current size of 12+ inches, but did not produce any flowers. I am hoping it will bloom next year.

Comments about American Meadows Bee Balm Petite Delight:

This plant arrived alive...and very, very small. I have to say this is my first time ordering plants online, but I truly expected to receive plants that looked like they were thriving. I have a very small garden, so I wanted something bright with many flowers, but I highly doubt this will bloom this year. See for yourself in the photograph-- it's the plant on the far right.

Used in a narrow sun-filled border so size important. It provides a lovely pop of color but not a fast grower.

Comments about American Meadows Bee Balm Petite Delight:

I put this next to red monarda that spreads and the red monarda, which is taller, is taking over this plant. Petite Delight does not spread like other monarda. I've had this plant for 2 years and it has gotten bigger but I will move it somewhere that it can be seen around its neighbors. (I'm in zone 4)

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
