Great color in the shade, The Bleeding Hearts. The genus Dicentra, commonly called Bleeding Heart, gives us some of the most treasured plants in America, providing dependable color in moist shade as companions with Hostas and Ferns. There are basically two major types:
1. Most popular and world-famous, is D. spectabilis, a species native to Japan. It is the larger of the two (to about 3 feet,) and has the famous little heart-shaped flowers arrayed along arching stems, a lot like a string of pearls. The large bleeding hearts bloom only in spring, and in some areas, disappear altogether by midsummer, much like Trilliums and Daffodils.
2. The second type, the Fernleaf Bleeding Hearts, are hybrids of North American native wildflowers. They are smaller with finely cut blue-green foliage and similar flowers. However, with the fernleafs, the flowers are more bunched at the top of the stems, more like a dangling bouquet. And best of all, these plants continue to bloom not only in spring, but all summer into fall.
Our native Dicentras are all wonderful wildflowers of woodland shade, from the eastern Dutchmans Breeches and Fringed Bleeding Heart to the Northwests Pacific Bleeding Heart.
These magnificent plants have long been a herald of spring in Zones 2 to 9, a huge area of the US. They are quite easy to grow, as long as woodland conditions are provided. That means some shade, plenty of moisture with good drainage, and rich soil. Once your clumps have become large, you can easily divide the rhizomes after flowering.

"good plants"
"This was identical to the pink variety I planted next to it. A. M. told to wait till next year because it could take that maturation for them to bloom red. There is nothing in the description that mentions this. There is nothing in any description anywhere on any site that says anything like that. All sites say they bloom a true red. I have been lied to and this company does not want to admit they sent the wrong plant. Also. . . . dormant bare root plants are terrible. If they live and grow they are usually too immature to bloomer several years."
"Really had heart set on a red dicentra for my garden design, but was sent the pink one instead w lighter leaves. There should be compensation for this error w online ordering. Second time this has happened. . . so no, wouldn't recommend to a friend. We don't do this w clothes. Why is it acceptable w plants?"
"Lovely old-fashioned flowers."
"It's not red Valentine. Just pink."
"Was up and going to town complete with blooms within a few weeks. Only getting direct evening sun about an hour or two a day. It's already about a foot across with several flower spikes. I expect it'll need a bit more babying to get bigger since that area is heavy clay amended with organics and needs a weeding, but already performing well despite that and the unseasonable heat. Surprisingly resilient!"
"Went from a small root to a large blooming plant in a short time! I am disapppinted that the blooms are pink instead of red as described."
"I've never had great luck buying bare root plants 'mail order', but this may be the strongest growing, best blooming first year bleeding heart I've ever purchased, including those growing in pots sold at garden centers (and I've been gardening for over a half century). It would have easily earned 5 stars if it were what I ordered. Unfortunately, what I received is the standard 'old fashioned' bleeding heart, not the Valentine cultivar I wanted. This doesn't fit my garden design as well, but it'll be okay. So 5 stars for the plant and 0 stars for the cultivar = 3."
"Blooming and thriving after only 3 weeks!. I followed planting directions exactly and I hope we continue down this great path because I am so very pleased with this little plant. I tried to order another but out of stock for this year. Will call and be put on list for next year. Very healthy stock. Thank you American Meadows because all of your plants do so well for me, here in SC!"
"Excellent establish quickly"
