I bought these 2 falls ago even with the low rating cause I can usually get anything to grow. However, only 1 took. I was holding out to see if maybe it came back better year 2 but didn't get anything (not even the 1 came back). I bought some regular bleeding hearts from walmart at the same time and they actually grew/are still growing so I don't think it's the location. Would have been cool to have but I don't think they are going to show up. I would still order from American meadows though because this is the first time ever that their product hasn't delivered. I currently have a 1 year old cone flower plant in a different location that is over 4ft tall. :0)

Comments about American Meadows Dutchman's Breeches:

The roots were planted by a professional gardener from Brooklyn Botanic Garden and watered regularly via irrigation. And, hand watered at start-up. This is the first failure in literally thousands of plugs from other sources.

        I want a refund!

I planted these immediately when they arrived.
When I realized the squirrels were eating them I built cages to hopefully protect them but they just dug beneath the cage and ate them all.

We tried the dutchmans breeches in a 3 pack the first time. Not one even showed any promise of growing. We contacted the company and they gladly sent out another pack. The second pack of 3 didn't do anything. I will not let this beat me....lol.... my mother talks of these growing everywhere when she was a child , and I will succeed !!!

These are kind of hard to grow. I was told that the seeds and corms need a cold spell before they will grow. So, I planted them in augmented soil this spring, they didn't do anything yet maybe they will sprout this next spring having gone through a winter. They are a novelty item and are early and go dormant early also.

I planted 6 Dutchman's Breeches plants at the same time I planted some Bleeding Hearts, in the same area. The Bleeding Hearts all came up this year and look great. Only 4 of the 6 Dutchman's Breeches plants came up and of those, 3 quickly withered away. The one remaining plant is still there, but it seems to have stopped growing, although it looks healthy. Altogether, a disappointing experience.

                                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
