Description
This is the most famous member of our native milkweed family, and a well-known magnet for butterflies. The original orange native is one of the few wildflowers that is so beautiful, it was taken into perennial gardens just as it is in nature, with no hybridization. Well, all that's changed. Now we have a butter yellow version with the same qualities. Imagine how great they'll look together--an orange and yellow butterfly buffet!

The Butterfly Weeds have very little in common with their relative, the common milkweed--the familiar, tall, dusty-rose-flowered weed so often found along roadsides and in farm fields. The Butterfly Weeds have much more refined foliage and are never pests.

The milkweed family of North American plants is named Asclepias after Asclepias, the famous Greek God of Medicine, since the plants have long been used in herbal medicine.

This Asclepias is best placed in a dry, sunny spot, and appreciates fast-draining gritty soil. This orange version is native over most all of the eastern part of North America, from Canada all the way to South Florida.

Comments about American Meadows Butterfly Weed Hello Yellow:

Received a tiny little plant that never really grew. I did not plant it in the ground with the other Milkweeds, it seemed too small and fragile. It has a lovely yellow bloom that has lasted a very long time, but it is still in a small pot. If it overwinters OK, I will try putting it in the ground in the spring.

Comments about American Meadows Butterfly Weed Hello Yellow:

started raising butterflies ,had several milkweed plants. I bought butterfly weed from American Meadow, it is unlike regular butterfly weed.It grows like a vine and does not look like weed at all.Monarc, swallowtail and all other butterfly visit my yard and lay eggs, but not on the weed from American Meadow. Once I had Monarch caterpillar on my other weed, I put them on this weed but they did not eat it.It is been taken care well but only one feet tall still and started to die.

Use to attract butterflies and bees. Does this well, but also got milkweed bugs after blooms were done. It's lovely, but there are better options.

Comments about American Meadows Butterfly Weed Hello Yellow:

The plants come packed in sawdust as deceptively small bare root plants. Fortunately, both of these (they came two per pack) survived, and grew somewhat this year. No flowers, but fingers are crossed that they come back next year full force. (I also ordered the standard orange variety, which came three in a bag. One root was rotten, and another so small it died shortly after planting. One did grow, but no flowers yet either.)
