"Cardinal-flowers kindle their spiral flames, and illuminate the dark nooks among the shrubbery."
...Nathanial Hawthorne, "The Old Manse"

Anyone who's ever taken a hike in midsummer woods anywhere in the east probably knows this stunning plant. Cardinal flowers bloom with tall spikes of lipstick red flowers in August in wet American woodlands all the way from Canada to Louisiana.

"Compliment Deep Red" at about 3 feet is a little shorter than the native, but the color is the same--brilliant red. You'll love these vivid flowers as much as the hummingbirds. Pick a moist spot in sun or partial shade for yours.

Added color to edge of shade garden. Was not a large plant by the end of season, but looked good enough. Cardinal flowers are supposed to be hardy in New England, but this variety did not survive our harsh winter in Central Connecticut.

Well, unfortunately it got devoured by caterpillars, but it did grow a new, ready for next year. The new shoots are very healthy. If it wasn't for the strong root system I would be telling you how it died. I'm looking forward to seeing this bloom next year.

                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
