Description
Cardinal-flowers kindle their spiral flames, and illuminate the dark nooks among the shrubbery.
...Nathanial Hawthorne, The Old Manse

Anyone who's ever taken a hike in midsummer woods anywhere in the east probably knows this stunning plant. Cardinal flowers bloom with tall spikes of lipstick red flowers in August in wet American woodlands all the way from Canada to Louisiana.

Queen Victoria at about 3 feet is a little shorter than the native, and the color is a little deeper velvety red. You'll love these vivid flowers as much as the hummingbirds. Pick a moist spot in sun or partial shade for yours.

Comments about American Meadows Cardinal Flower Queen Victoria - Plant:

While it didn't look great when it arrived, I planted it quickly and it seemed to get established very well. Then ... the deer ate it and it never recovered! I had bought it because it was listed as "deer resistant" or "deer tend to avoid", so that was disappointing. I gave it 3 stars because it probably would have done great!

Comments about American Meadows Cardinal Flower Queen Victoria - Plant:

I ordered two cardinal plants. One was placed in a crowded wild flower garden and did exceptionally well. Tall, long lasting blooms that a hummingbird found and loved - more than the hummer feeder that was right next to it! The other was planted in a cut garden bed 12 feet away in the same sunlight and barely survived pest damage (and was treated with dust). It has just now (late August) started to bloom, but is less than 1/4 the height of the strong plant. Mixed feelings.

Comments about American Meadows Cardinal Flower Queen Victoria - Plant:

We moved to USA few years ago. We never saw a hummingbird in nature and my kids were not familiar with North American native plants. So I ordered 3 bulbs of Cardinal flower last year. But they did not make it. This spring I got replacement from American Meadows. This time they were in must better condition. They started to bloom in July. Now they are taller than me (I am about 160cm) and hummingbirds come to us everyday.

I have several of these and they're outstanding! I live in zone 6 and keep these in partial shade near a bird bath so the ground there stays moist. The hummingbirds love them!
