Plant Information

This stunning blue and white hybrid, growing about 30 tall, is one of the famous Song Bird Columbines, hybridized by Charles Weddle, one of Americas most respected hybridizers.

Its beauty mimics the colors and form of our largest wild columbine, the famous Colorado Blue Columbine, and offers this wonderful color combination to gardeners everywhere.

The Wild Columbines Many people think columbines are the loveliest flowers of all, and they are certainly important in the wildflower world. Many important species are North American natives. Everyone in the Northeast loves the Wild Eastern Columbine, the beautiful smallish red one, Aquilegia canadensis, and of course, everyone in the Rockies loves the State Flower of Colorado, the large, blue Colorado Columbine, A. caerulea. There are important species native to Europe and Japan as well.

Comments about American Meadows Columbine Songbird Bluebird:

I got this type of columbine along with another variety. This one came (almost?) dead and didn't survive. The other variety did. This was the second batch that you sent me. The first batch came in similar shape.

Comments about American Meadows Columbine Songbird Bluebird:

I ordered this flower last year and it didn't make it at all. They were already out of stock by the time I reported it, but I opted to wait the year to receive a replacement this spring rather than a refund. I am DELIGHTED with my replacement. FYI for those in hotter climates (I'm in Florida), they really do need mostly all shade. I planted this in almost entirely shade and have been rewarded with a number of flowers... and while the plant is still a rather small size. The flowers are nearly the size of the plant! It just loves flowering! I also mixed some lime powder into the soil via the suggestion of a local nurseryman I talked to (it's planted among oaks). I think that helped A LOT.

Comments about American Meadows Columbine Songbird Bluebird:

The plants were small when they arrived. Looked weak. One died in the spring. The other two are struggling to survive. They receive a half day of sun. This year was very warm, that did not help.

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
