Plant Information

This is the delphinium for gardeners who don't want the bother of the 4 to 6 ft. Pacific Hybrids. Magic Fountain Delphiniums are simply a shorter form.

Although the flowers are similar, these shorter delphiniums are less trouble for the gardener, requiring less staking and less worrying about broken stems due to wind and rain.

Choose the right spot. This is important. These plants need excellent well-drained soil, rich in humus. And maybe even more important, they need some protection from the wind and rain. Blowing wind and rain can ruin them, just when you're expecting the big bloom. Don't let that happen. Choose some spot with something behind them--a wall, a tall strong plant, something.

Enjoy! Watch after them as they grow, water and feed often, and once you begin to see buds, and then blooms, you'll know what all the buzz is about. These flowers are so exquisite, they put others to shame. The growth habit is a lot like hollyhocks, but comparing delphiniums to hollyhocks is like comparing a brand new Mercedes to a nice old Ford. If you're new to delphiniums, you're growing a spectacular "wall of flowers", unlike anything you've ever grown before.

Plants arrived in distress

from Portland

Comments about American Meadows Delphinium Magic Fountains:

Blooms were beautiful and long-lasting.

Service and delivery comments:

Unfortunately, of the 3 plants I ordered, only one survived after arrival. I planted them all right away with the hope that this would allow a recovery, but no.
They were not in good shape when I got them - one had pretty much lost all its leaves and was a goner pretty quickly. A second damaged one hung in for a week or so, but then died. The one plant that arrived in good shape did well over the summer, and had lots of long-lasting blooms. I had discarded all the packaging, so I didn't contact anyone about a refund or replacement plants. I suppose I should have.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
