The Ostrich Fern is a grand, native plant from the American woodlands. It will thrive in a wet, shady area of the garden. This Fern gets its name from plumes that resemble ostrich feathers. (Matteuccia struthiopteris)

Here's one of the truly magnificent ferns from the American woodlands. With its very large vase shape, Ostrich Ferns create very dramatic vistas wherever they grow, often reaching 6 feet in height. They do not spread quickly and are very winter hardy, so they are very useful for the home gardener who wants a large, monumental specimen.

All that is needed for this grand plant is a partially or fully shaded spot, rich soil, and ample moisture. Ferns are a wonderful solution for your pesky deer problem – they tend to stay away from ferns and go for other, tastier plants. They are also a great addition to any shady spot in the garden. Their green, frilly plumes add interesting texture and provide a great backdrop for other, more colorful plants. They can also be planted on their own to provide a natural, woodland feel. You can also try planting ferns in a large container, setting them in a shady area on your porch or patio area. They will create an interesting conversation starter and wonderful addition to any container garden you may have. Cut ferns also make an elegant filler for flower arrangements and will add frilly texture to your favorite bouquets.

Comments about American Meadows Ostrich Fern:

These "bare root" ferns came last fall, and didn't look promising, but I planted them as directed in several shady locations. They were a little slow to get started this spring, but they've all come up, and are much bigger and more vigorous than I expected from looking at the little rhizome fragments I planted.

I'm very pleased--they are growing well, putting up more fronds as the season goes on.

Comments about American Meadows Ostrich Fern:

Loved watching the Ferns emerge. They were so much fun to see everyday and keep track of them unfurling. They are now about 12 inches tall and look beautiful among the other Ferns as well as Columbine and Hosta in my yard.

      dead...

      By

      from Seattle, WA

Comments about American Meadows Ostrich Fern:

I ordered three plants and they came timely enough, but they were sickly looking out of the box. I planted and watered, and two withered and died within days. The third has one green leaf left and perhaps it will make it, perhaps not. Disappointing.

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
