Plant Information

The vining honeysuckle begins flowering in June and continues into fall, blooming a true, bright red.

A big bonus is that these blooms are magnets for hummingbirds, and once your vine is growing and blooming, you'll see them regularly. Honeysuckle vines, when happy in a moist location with full sun will cover a trellis or wall of up to 144 sq. ft. (12 x 12). If you don't have a trellis, Major Wheeler makes a beautiful running ground cover or shrub-like mound with its dense production of beautiful deep green leaves and lots of brilliant red flowers. Keeps blooming all summer long.

Plant grew so fast you could watch it go up the trellis as you were standing in front of it:-) Grew from 6" to 6' first year. Wanted something for butterfly/hummingbird garden and this fit the bill perfectly. Didn't get any blooms this year, but expect it will bloom beautifully next season. Used it in a bed with yarrow, echinacea and butterfly weed. Filled up the vertical space very quickly. Very impressed with my Major Wheeler.

Comments about American Meadows Honeysuckle Vine Major Wheeler:

I thought it may grow a bit more aggressively than it did and I would see more blooms from all of the reviews I read, but not to be the first year. I purchased a large trellis for this vine to mature over and have purchased another plant to put on the other side of the trellis. Jury is still out on how nice of an addition this is to the garden until I see how it bounces back next year. I did get pictures of the few blooms I had though.

Used the vine on a trellis that is against the house. The trellis might be to flushed against the house that might be why it is having trouble climbing up it. It is also beside a water garden.

Comments about American Meadows Honeysuckle Vine Major Wheeler:

The plants arrived in great shape, I was very pleased with their size and health. We planted them in a new garden bed, they are growing well after a slight set back from a late spring freeze. We live in a zone 3 (micro climate) for our area normally considered zone 5. Will see how they winter, looking forward to next season, more growth and flowers.

Comments about American Meadows Honeysuckle Vine Major Wheeler:

This is the first full season for my Major in a Zone 6, part-sun setting. It seems to have topped-out at about 10 feet high but the width is still filling out. Numerous flowers bloomed about June 1. I asked around for this at the area garden centers last year and the response was always, "Never heard of it." Thanks, American Meadows.

Planted along a fence line, and it completely failed. No growth. Mostly dried up. Other honeysuckle from a local nursery did very well with the same effort and care. Just not the right plant for me.

One of the brightest and prettiest vines in my yard. I had purchased 2 and then went back and purchased 2 more. I'm almost ready to cut down 2 different Honeysuckle vines and get 2 more of the Honeysuckle Vine Major Wheeler. I have 80 feet of back fence to cover and 50 feet of it is covered by Major Wheeler.

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
