Description
This is probably the most famous of the Louisiana irises, a great group of native North American wildflowers. Among the hybrids made from the five native species, Black Gamecock has truly stunning black/purple blooms up to 6 across, making it a scene-stealer in any garden.

The Louisiana Irises are some of the most wonderful native plants in North America. Growing in and near wetlands in Louisiana and neighboring states, these amazing irises have cross-hybridized naturally over the years, so there are now an infinite number of colors and types. According to Iris expert, Claire Austin, today, they are found in the wild in tones of blue, lavender, yellow, white, pink, and orange/red, the latter color not found in any other irises. Their flowers are large and flatter than other irises, with less of a distinction between the upward center petals and outer falls, the petals that droop on most irises. This unique flower form makes the Louisiana Iris, in some ways, especially when viewed from above, the most beautiful of all the worlds irises.

They need plenty of water, but a well-watered perennial border is fine. A wet spot in your garden or meadow is even better.

Comments about American Meadows Louisiana Iris Black Gamecock - Root:

I put these plants in the ground last year and received nothing in the form of flowers. I wasn't really expecting any blooms since many things require a little "setting" time to establish through the summers here in Florida. But I was rewarded this spring! These iris were among my first plants to set their blooms and I was repeatedly delighted with each stalk sending off AT LEAST 2 flowers, if not three. Their petals were like velvet and I could enjoy each bloom for several days before it began to wilt. I did apply a slow-release granule blooming fertilizer in September and again in February, but that's about it. The blades are already multiplying nicely as well.

Comments about American Meadows Louisiana Iris Black Gamecock - Root:

i have a wet spot in my yard in sun/dappled shade that collects water everytime it rains. planted 3 gamecock irises there and each one had 1 stunning flower the 1st year. by the 3rd year they are huge with many flowers and multiplying. there is an old saying about perennials: first they sleep, then they creep, then they leap! that is certainly true with these beauties.

Comments about American Meadows Louisiana Iris Black Gamecock - Root:

I got this as a gift for my mom. She planted it as soon as the ground thawed slightly and got a beautiful bloom within a couple of months. This is a slightly brighter purple than I expected from a "Black Gamecock", but it is truly a stunning flower.

Comments about American Meadows Louisiana Iris Black Gamecock - Root:

I planted these in a large ceramic pot with a large water saucer on a bench on my patio. I kept them moist ( easy here in the Great Northwest) and the plants grew to almost 2 feet but never a bud or a flower. I am hoping they flower this year.
