USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

One of our best-known native plants, and always a favorite with children, Jack-In-The-Pulpit is quite common in rich woodland. The plants are often solitary, large, and quite striking in the spring woods. The elegant hood curves forward over the Jack, an upright spike inside, creating the preacher in the canopied pulpit design. These treasured plants grow from a bulb, and can do very well in partially shaded perennial borders, growing tall if fertilized, and adding an exotic touch amid otherwise more traditional flower displays. Both the unique bloom and then the bright red berries that follow add a bit of mystery and woodland lore to any garden, and if undisturbed, the plants return faithfully each spring.

Comments about American Meadows Jack in the Pulpit:

I'm disappointed. I bought the Jack plants twice. The first 3 plants I received never did anything. So I bought more and the second 3 did nothing either. I planted them in a moist, shady area and still nothing. I expected at least some leaves to sprout because I understand it can a while for a plant to settle in and grow but nothing ever came of the 2 sets of 3 plants I planted.

These grew. Out of the 3 planted, 2 made jacks. So I hope next year will be good.

          Bulbs did not produce plants.

Comments about American Meadows Jack in the Pulpit:

Bulbs did not produce plants. No signs of life whatsoever. We've had adequate rainfall and bulbs were located in an area that is shaded except very early in the morning.

The Jack in the Pulpit, Red and Pained Trillium arrived in great shape, and came up and did very well after we planted them in the nearby woods. I am expecting bloom maybe next year.

These are terrible, out of the 12 I purchased, only two came up and petered out after about 4 inches and one bloom.

Comments about American Meadows Jack in the Pulpit:

I purchased these last year and the first ones did not make it; AM replaced them and they did okay as far as coming up, only one had a pulpit and to me that means I have hope. This is my first experience with growing them in pots in Florida.

The plants are not vigorous growers. Hopefully, after a few years, they will resemble the Jack-in-the-Pulpits out in the woods.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
