This plant, when introduced into the US in the mid-nineties, created a sensation. For example, the University. of Arkansas published a paper on it saying, that it had created much excitement amongst gardeners, especially..since it is... uniquely beautiful, long-lived and well behaved. Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra Aureola) is just such a plant.

This beauty grows naturally on mountainside cliffs on Japans main island, and in American gardens, reaches only 8 or 12 inches. It spreads very slowly, by underground roots, as clumps enlarge.

Comments about American Meadows Japanese Forest Grass Aureola:

Received the product and it was only 3-4 inches tall. Since putting it in the ground it has not yet grown. Maybe in 5 years I can let you know how it will look, but doubt it will make it through winter.

very slow growing. Only came up about 3 inches for the whole Summer. I hope it comes back next year. Maybe once it gets a good start it will grow better.

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
