The Lamiums are more popular every year. Perhaps they haven't been known widely since their old common name is Dead Nettle. But they're extremely useful in the garden, since they thrive and bloom beautifully in shade. The basic species is taller and more weedy with insignificant white flowers, but just look at the shortened hybrids--beautiful jewel-toned flowers on decorative, often variegated foliage. Great for covering the ground in woodland or other shady gardens.

Comments about American Meadows Lamium Orchid Frost:

I L-O-V-E this ground cover! It is just the most wonderful variegated color and the flower heads are adorable! It definitely stays low (be careful what you plant it next to, it may become hidden), but it is one of my favorite additions. It is the easiest thing to propagate from cuttings as well! And the leaves have never been burned by what Florida sun hits them (which I can't say for all shade plants listed for zone 9). The ONLY problem is the leaves appear to be highly munch-able to garden insects. I lost one b/c it was eaten to nothing in a day! BUT I used a little Organocide this year and problem appears to be solved:)

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
