Description
The botanical name for Red Hot Poker or Torch Lily used to be Tritoma. But today, its Kniphofia (pronounced Nip-fo-phia) and more popular every year. Brilliant Alcazar grows up to about 4 feet tall with the signature bright red and yellow flower-spikes. (the red flowers are the freshly-opened ones, they turn yellow as they age.)

Good perennial gardeners use these for big focal points at the back of the border or in the center of island beds, where they never disappoint. After flowering, they're not much to look at, so cut down the flower stalk and the foliage about half way, and it'll all be back next year.

How-To: Red Hot Poker is really easy to grow, but remember, this plant is from South Africa. That tells you it wants full sun and sharp-draining soil. In its native range, its used to rocky poor soil, so keep that in mind. No mushy muddy peat around this one!

Looked locally for this large red hot poker plant and was unable to find it. Was thrilled I was able to purchase it at American Meadows. Waiting until next year when the pokers come up!

Comments about Red Hot Poker Alcazar:

I planted mine a year ago, in the spring. It bloomed beautifully last summer, and again this summer. There seem to be even more blooms this year. They are getting direct sunlight for about 6 or 7 hours. My flower garden is basically clay with about a half a foot of topsoil on top, and a few inches of mulch. Seems like the opposite of "sandy loamy soil," so I was a little nervous about how well these would do, but I'm very pleased with the results! Once the first set of blossoms dies off, a new set follows. So there's always something blooming, until the end of the season. Love these!!

I placed it in the front center of my street bordering garden. Neighbors and passers-by have repeatedly commented on how striking, colorful, and long-lasting the pokers are.

Comments about Red Hot Poker Alcazar:

This plant is zoned for my area, but it need a little resting from the sun. So I recommend a little shade. Planted in two areas one with full sun all day and one with a little shade. Both have green tops but the one in a little shade is much taller then the full sun one.
