Nicholas is another in the beautiful parade of Japanese Forest Grasses recently brought to the U.S. Like Aureola, the first import, this one is already a popular alternative, with its stunning fall foliage.

When Japanese Forest Grass Aureola was introduced into the US in the mid-nineties, it created a sensation. For example, the University. of Arkansas published a paper on it saying, that it had created much excitement amongst gardeners, especially..since it is... uniquely beautiful, long-lived and well behaved. Japanese forest grass (Hakonechloa macra Aureola) is just such a plant.

This beauty grows naturally on mountainside cliffs on Japans main island, and in American gardens, reaches only 8 or 12 inches. It spreads very slowly, by underground roots, as clumps enlarge.
