Drought-tolerant hummingbird magnets for dry, sunny spots

Penstemons, commonly called beardtongue or bearded tongue, are tough, drought-tolerant plants perfect for low-maintenance gardens. They're ideal for sunny, dry spots where other, moisture-loving plants struggle. Penstemons produce mounds of pretty foliage, with tall flower spikes appearing in spring and early summer. Each blooming stalk is made up of small, tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds. Mostly native to the western U.S. and Mexico, penstemon is popular for adding to rock gardens.
