All catnips, or catmints are members of the mint family, but this one was chosen because its such a big improvement over the old weedier catnips. I purchased these as the very first thing I had ever gotten from American Meadows and I was not disappointed! They are huge now and I have gotten even more from this grower and will continue! Great price, quality and super communicative. I would highly recommend again and again :)

Comments about American Meadows Catmint Walkers Low:

I live in southern California and wanted a "Lavendar Field" in my landscape. However, lavendar was too picky about watering and drainage. Planted about 200 of these plants in rows on a hillside and have been able to achieve the same visual effect as with lavendar. This catmint does not smell like lavendar. However, this variety does not smell like catmint, either. It has a very light scent which is NOT attractive to my cats. This is a real bonus because normally cats will absolutely detroy the plants. This variety is supposed to be sterile and does not set seed. However, I do get an occasional plant that seems to be the same variety. It could be a runner that roots to make a new plant.

In my area (Zone 8 bordering Zone 9), the plants bloom early (May to June). If I shear the spent flowers in July, not only does the field look neater, but there is a second bloom in September to October. They respond well to a timed release fertilizer for roses or vegetables. Plants are dormant in the winter then start to grow again in March. No pests other than a few gophers. Wish the plant stayed green all winter, but then that is not the fault of the plant - it's an herb!

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
