With full plumes of bright pink flowers, this variety is part of the Visions series, so it's more tolerant of drought than other Astilbes. Add pink pizzazz to a shady spot. PP#11860 (Astilbe chinensis)

The new Visions series of the Chinese Astilbes (A. chinensis) are more drought tolerant than the others, so if your garden area dries out in mid-summer, these may be the best choices.

About Astilbes: Easy to grow, tough and hardy, Astilbes are now a mainstay in all good perennial gardens. In fact, American gardeners are in the midst of a passionate love affair with Astilbes. Native to the far east, these beautiful plants and their hybrids have revolutionized the perennial possibilities of moist, shaded American gardens. They are companions of ferns and our favorite annuals, impatiens--one of the few flowers that make big color in full or partial shade.

The vast majority of the scores of hybrids now available are the work of one man, master hybridizer Georg Arends (Yes, that's why you keep seeing arendsii tacked onto hybrid names.) Mr. Arends, working in Ronsdorf, Germany spent decades hybridizing Sedums, Phlox, Campanulas....and his first love, Astilbes. In 1933, Arends introduced 74 different Astilbe cultivars, and there have been hundreds since.

These plume-flowered plants have ultra-handsome fern-like foliage, (usually dark glossy green) and stiff stems that always hold the elegant plumes aloft without any staking. Flower arrangers find the flower plumes are just as handsome in a vase as in a garden.

From tiny dwarfs to big draping hybrids, Astilbes are all quite easy to grow, as long as their ground does not dry out for long. They must have plenty of moisture, so choose your locations carefully.

Comments about American Meadows Astilbe Visions in Pink:

Planted it at the start of the summer, and it's grown nicely. Next year it should be large and full.

Comments about American Meadows Astilbe Visions in Pink:

I ordered 3 and also got a 4th stowaway runt of a plant that has survived. Two have buds and I can't wait to see them open. The other two are smaller. Though planted in the same garden as the others, I think they got a bit more sun and were not pleased. May have to relocate them next year.

Comments about American Meadows Astilbe Visions in Pink:

I planted these in a front plantar in our main yard. They are absolutely gorgeous. A beautiful bright pink color with tons and tons of blooms. I've since bought more as I was thrilled with them. The original plant has really increased in size so I'm hoping for even more blooms this year.

Comments about American Meadows Astilbe Visions in Pink:

This was my first year planting a flower garden. I bought your Groupon in spring and have been using your website to learn about how to care for a garden. Your flower bulbs are great because they come ready to plant. As a new gardener I'm a little confused about the different types of sun (full/partial/shade) and I'm pretty sure I burnt my astilbes. I planted my dahlias in a spot that gets full sun all day long and they are doing great. I thought partial sun meant somewhere that gets shade as the sun moves through the day, so I planted my astilbes along the east side of the house that gets shade starting in afternoon. It looks like the sun was too much for them and they didn't do so hot (no flowers and leaves always wilted.) In the future could you define partial sun/shade? Is that under a trellis or does it mean sun during certain hours?

              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
