Monkshood often reminds gardeners of delphiniums since the rich blue color is the same. But its much easier to grow. First of all, Monkshood is plenty tall, but shorter than the towering delphiniums that always need staking. This one stands on its own. And its not as brittle as a delphinium, so does a simpler job of adding tall blue flower spikes to your late spring garden. The roots are poisonous.

I wanted a plant for the back of my shade garden. No young children around so decided to use this plant with its lovely blue flowers. Do have young grandchildren that visit so I do have to warn them about this plant, however, the leaves when not in bloom and the blooms themselves make it a plant well worth having.
I did need replacement plants since last year's order failed to grow. When I asked for replacements, the service department was prompt and courteous in their reply. The replacement plants were excellent.

Comments about American Meadows Common Monkshood:

I found the instructions unclear because the tubers are tough to understand, even after Googling for clarification. I wasn't sure which side was up or even where the crown was on each one (I've ordered 6 of these and the tubers all looked totally different from each other - it's not simple.) Of the first batch, one is growing and healthy, one did nothing, and one was looking okayish until my husband accidentally stepped on it. Of the second batch, one is showing green growth (finally) the others are not. I would guess that the no-growth ones were placed incorrectly, despite my best efforts. I would be happy to doubt my own novice gardener skills, but the other reviews seem to confirm my belief that this is a difficult tuber to place correctly.

I wish American Meadows would sell tiny aconitum plants instead, because my one healthy sprout is lovely.

Comments about American Meadows Common Monkshood:

I ordered 6 Monkshood plants and got them in the ground immediately. None of the 6 came up. I called American Meadows and they were extremely helpful and efficient in replacing those six plants. When the replacements arrived I immediately got those in the ground - one has survived. I am giving up on the Monkshood and replacing it with something else. I've had no problem with anything else this spring but I just can't seem to get the Monkshood to survive.

You were very kind in sending a second set of plants. I am not sure why they have not shown any growth. I will wait until spring and see if I have any sprouting. I hope they are just hibernating.

Comments about American Meadows Common Monkshood:

I ordered 3 Monkshood plants. I was not sure what spot they would love and thrive in the best. The first batch of 3 did not survive. The second batch, and American Meadows was very nice about replacing the first 3. The second 3, looked good and they were planted. I did see e initial leaves for a while, but after 2 weeks they also disappeared. I have hopes that I will see them pop up this spring. I am also realistic enough to say, perhaps these plants do not like the heat and humidity here.

This is a very tried and true shade plant that tolerates most depths of shade well. It gives an interesting splash of a true blue color.

Comments about American Meadows Common Monkshood:

I don't know what was with this product. Not one of the three even BEGAN to grow, they just did nothing. I think maybe it was too hot here? I've never had much luck with Delphinium either (these remind me of those) and it always seems to be a heat thing. So maybe just not meant for Florida? But American Meadows gave me an immediate refund, no questions asked.

I love this plant and wanted it in my garden. Unfortunately, it never grew. I suspect that our very hot, dry VA summer was not the best time for planting. However, even with irrigation, none of them survived.

                          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
