Plant Information

Hidcote is another variety of Lavandula angustifolia which is a bit shorter than Munstead.

Lavender for your garden? Here's how to grow it: Everybody loves lavender, and who hasn't ooohed and ahhhed over photos of the incredible purple fields in the UK and the South of France? Well, the photo on our Lavender listing page was taken in Oregon, and there's no reason you cant grow lavender in your own backyard. But there are a few things you need to know.

First of all, if you live in a very humid place, it simply wont work. Its almost impossible to grow lavender in South Florida, for example, but most of the US, north to Zone 5, is fine. Of course, the farther north you are, the more plant you'll lose each year to winter kill. A good thick hedge will probably never happen in Zone 5, but don't worry. Winter may kill the tops, but these plants are tough and dependable perennials; they'll be back and bloom for you each year.

Where and how you plant is all important. Keep in mind that the lavenders are native to the Mediterranean, and if you've ever been to the South of France, you know that means hot, rocky, and arid--almost desert-like in many places. This tells you lavenders demand sharp-draining soils, never rich, damp and soggy. In fact, if your soil is heavy, its worth it to mix in some sand or gravel before you plant, and perhaps create little mounds for your plants so each one drains quickly. Fact is, if you fail with lavender, it will probably be due to over-watering. Lavenders don't mind drought a bit, and love hot, blazing sun. Remember, little water and no shade!

As for varieties, most of our choices are cultivars of the English Lavenders, which are cultivars of Lavendula angustifolia. These include both the famous Hidcote dwarf and Munstead, the most popular variety for the US. Jean Davis is a pink variety, and Lavance Purple is famous for its particularly vivid blue-purple bloom. Beyond the English types, there are lavenders commonly called French, Spanish, and other names.

The plant arrived very small but healthy. Two weeks after planting it died. So I gave it 3 stars because I don't know what it would have looked or smelled like. Just wanted to be fair.

Comments about American Meadows Lavender Hidcote:

These lavender plants had a very successful first year. Four out of the five plants grew quickly and flourished immediately. The fifth plant was a bit more shy about it but ended up doing wonderfully as well once I gave it a little extra food. The fragrance is very subtle at this point but I hope that continues to increase as well. I alternated these with some of the Indian Summer Black Eyed Susans and the appearance together is just stunning. Love my lavender!

Comments about American Meadows Lavender Hidcote:

First, lavender arrived in a super packaging presentation. All were healthy and beautiful and the box smelled good as I opened it. I had prepared my area well in advance, did my research online. I took them down to the garden and put them in and did water at the beginning of their arrival. This area of Virginia was doused with rain and I only watered if we were several days without rain and then not a soaking more of a sip. Not only did these grow they bloomed!!!! I am so happy!!! They did awesome.

Comments about American Meadows Lavender Hidcote:

I ordered 90 lavender plants with which to line a long path. Once the plants mature and become well established it will look wonderful. The plants were very small when they arrived, and a few did not acclimate successfully to being in the groung; I will have to replace those. Most of the rest are holding their own, and several have grown exponentially since planted in June. I am happy with their growth generally, but am apprehensive, as I am about all new plants, about how they'll do over their first winter.

I bought this at the end of the season, on sale. The plant arrived rootbound. I've never seen so many roots outside a container, a half inch mat of roots. After cutting off the roots, I finally got it out of the container and into the ground. It died quickly.

They were extremely healthy looking and have prospered and grown to many times their original size in just a few months. I will continue to order from American Meadows and have recommended them to others.

Comments about American Meadows Lavender Hidcote:

I used the Hidcote lavender as a border around a water feature in a moderately sunlight area. It arrived heathy and has grown beautifully. I have havested its fragrant stems a couple of times this summer and it contnues to produce. The size has increased tenfold. I am very pleased.

                          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
