Description
This famous lily is not a lily at all, but a member of the iris family. It is native to China and Japan, but naturalizes easily here in North America. The blackberry in the name refers to the seed which are formed in large bulbous seed cases which crack open in fall revealing the shiny black seeds.

        Comments about Blackberry Lily:

I have been growing this gem in my rock garden for quite a few years now. My favorite part is in the fall when all the seeds come on. They do look like large blackberries! Beautiful!

        wonderful plant

        Comments about Blackberry Lily:

A friend gave me a small bag of the little black seeds, planted them in September, and by spring - - growing wonderfully! an inch a day. Mid-summer, flowering daily - again and again. It took me over a year to figure out what this plant was (thought it was an iris), and now I know it is a blackberry lily. I saved lots of seeds from the plants and now I am planting them elsewhere in my yard - - behind other plants as they get to be a good 3+ feet in height. Hardy and just lovely. Love them!
