Rubrum is one of the most decorative of the popular Fountain Grasses. The elegantly arching plumes on this beauty are tinged reddish/pink, making a really lovely show in the garden.

The perennial fountain grasses are a prized group for landscaping accents, and they live up their name. They are mound-forming creating a fountain-like focal point wherever they grow, with a spectacular bloom in midsummer.

Ornamental Grasses provide texture, uniqueness, and beauty that will set off your favorite blooming flowers. Not only a dynamic element to your garden, Ornamental Grasses are extremely easy to grow, maintain, and will provide additional interest by evolving in seasons while the rest of your garden may be resting.

Not very hardy.

Comments about American Meadows Purple Fountain Grass Rubrum:

All of the plants died. I will probably buy them from the greenhouse from now on. In the past that is what I have done. They seem to take hold better.

Comments about American Meadows Purple Fountain Grass Rubrum:

We ordered this because we couldn't find it in the garden shops here in Pittsburgh. We are from Texas and had these in the corner flower beds around the pool. You plant them and do nothing but watch them grow. They get beautiful plumes on them and the reddish purple color is amazing. We planted it in a large pot and placed the pot in front of our a/c unit that sits in the front flower bed. It hides the ugly a/c unit and the plumes dance in the breeze when the a/c compels on.

    • Condo deck plant

Comments about American Meadows Purple Fountain Grass Rubrum:

I live in a 2nd floor condo with a deck, and I purchased 2 of these plants. I planted them and put them on either end of my deck. They grew quickly, and they are absolutely beautiful. They are very tall and wide with lovely plumes. They just look beautiful and unique from the sidewalk and street. They only get the morning sun. I couldn't be more pleased.

    Buyer Beware

    By

Comments about American Meadows Purple Fountain Grass Rubrum:

I am very disappointed in the product received. BUYER BEWARE! You will only receive a small size plant for this very expensive price. It's the size of a pony pack. My bad. WAY TO EXPENSIVE for what you get.

It will take several years before I even have a plant. Stick with your local nursery, get a plant you can see once you plant it in the ground, and save on shipping.

    Good grief.

    Best Uses

    • Front yard focal point
    • Good segue between plants
    • Interesting contrast

Comments about American Meadows Purple Fountain Grass Rubrum:

When I turned over our front lawn to plants and flowers I needed some sort of focal point with a lot of Wow factor. I saw the ornamental grasses offered on the American Meadows site and picked two varieties to start with. Delivery was prompt, including planting directions, tips and lots of encouragement.
I planted the Purple Fountain Grass and hoped for the best. It has grown to such a wonderful height and bounty that my neighborhood has expressed admiration and pleasure at seeing it daily. I live on a main street and wanted to provide fun, wit and interest for the good people of Medford. Dog walkers, runners, joggers, stroller-pushers stop by to compliment my garden, especially noting the splendor of the Purple Fountain grass.
I haven't any criticism about the plants ordered, they have been healthy, prolific and add so much color and creativity to my front yard garden. I ordered more for next year!

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
