Agapanthus is one of the ancient plants with romantic common names. Most common is Lily of the Nile, or Blue African Lily, but the botanical name comes from the Greek word meaning love, so its also sometimes known as The Flower of Love.

Whatever you call it, you'll love it in your garden. Its a shade plant that demands moisture, but good drainage. The stems rise about waist high, and open vivid blue flower clusters that are rounded or globe-like, something like an Allium, but with a looser, softer look. Full bloom happens in mid and late summer. This plant is native to South Africa, so can take plenty of heat, as long as it has some shade and plenty of moisture.

I leave in South Florida ( Z-10),I have two of them, keep the flowers for long time, just water and fertilizer, sandy soil, mulch, partial shade, a lot of heat, a new season start,(March) and I change the plants about 4 feet of the original location, responding very well,no signs of stress...I will buy more, those two were an experiment in my garden..works perfect...very little maintenance, no worries....

Got two leaves only

I planted nine of these in different locations. All had ample filtered light and water and good soil. None of them produced more than two leaves. Anyone else have this experience this summer?

Very nice bulbs arrived with little shoots coming out. I planted them in two planters and kep the soil t well watered, part sun, part shade, and covered in moss. It took a full year, but we are seeing hardy plants with blooms just about to burst. Very excited!

Comments about American Meadows African Lily:

This is an amazing plant given the proper environment.
In California and Hawaii this is a go to choice for long borders
or in large pots. It must have loose reasonably neutral 7.5 to acid 6.5 soil. Snails will walk a mile for this plant...they can hide deep in the leaves or under them.
Ph is critical for most plants. Agapanthus will not do well in clay or alkaline soil. I think Allium is a better choice for colder zones.Very similar in appearance.

I got these to use in pots - as I have had some in the ground(not from American Meadows)....One of the 3 bloomed this year, but they were just getting started...I'll store them - in the pot - in my heated basement this winter....and hopefully another year of root growth will make them be more prolific next summer.

I usually buy my plants, bulbs, rhizomes, and seeds through online shopping. I bought two pkgs. of these agapanthus and they have been great as container plants. I have them in either side of a bench under a shade tree in my backyard. As long as it has taken for them to sprout and grow, it has been a sheer delight to watch and anticipate the blossoms. These plants are some of my favorites and perfect for our Southern California weather.

                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
