This is Munstead, the most popular lavender grown in the US. Its not hard to grow, but its important where you plant it. Keep reading.

Lavender for your garden? Here's how to grow it: Everybody loves lavender, and who hasn't ooohed and ahhhed over photos of the incredible purple fields in the UK and the South of France? Well, the photo on our Lavender listing page was taken in Oregon, and there's no reason you cant grow lavender in your own backyard. But there are a few things you need to know.

First of all, if you live in a very humid place, it simply wont work. Its almost impossible to grow lavender in South Florida, for example, but most of the US, north to Zone 5, is fine. Of course, the farther north you are, the more plant you'll lose each year to winter kill. A good thick hedge will probably never happen in Zone 5, but don't worry. Winter may kill the tops, but these plants are tough and dependable perennials; they'll be back and bloom for you each year.

Where and how you plant is all important. Keep in mind that the lavenders are native to the Mediterranean, and if you've ever been to the South of France, you know that means hot, rocky, and arid--almost desert-like in many places. This tells you lavenders demand sharp-draining soils, never rich, damp and soggy. In fact, if your soil is heavy, its worth it to mix in some sand or gravel before you plant, and perhaps create little mounds for your plants so each one drains quickly. Fact is, if you fail with lavender, it will probably be due to over-watering. Lavenders don't mind drought a bit, and love hot, blazing sun. Remember, little water and no shade!

As for varieties, most of our choices are cultivars of the English Lavenders, which are cultivars of Lavendula angustifolia. These include both the famous Hidcote dwarf and Munstead, the most popular variety for the US. Jean Davis is a pink variety, and Lavance Purple is famous for its particularly vivid blue-purple bloom. Beyond the English types, there are lavenders commonly called French, Spanish, and other names.

"One Tough Plant"

These plants overwintered without any care on my part. I was amazed to see them when the snow melted and revealed hardy plants with no breakage at all!

Plant is dying

The plant looked okay until the weather became so hot but it is stated to enjoy the summer, so I wonder. I would like a healthy Munstead replacement, please!

Comments about American Meadows Lavender Munstead:

Great Fragrant plant for front door area, which is what I use the Lavender for.

A mentally challenged man urinated on my old plants and while not all of them died, I did have to replant. These were just perfect for that.

Comments about American Meadows Lavender Munstead:

I ordered two kinds of lavender, three plants apiece. All six thrived in a clay/sand soil and with minimal watering. They are simply superb plants. We had a cooler, damper Nebraska summer, and I hope they do as well in our typical dryer, hotter summers.

I ordered three of these towards the end of the season. All were root-bound. One died, the other two are alive and growing slowly. They haven't had a chance to bloom yet, so I can't comment on that.

I got these for the garden in my front entry that gets full-sun and is hard to grow in and these have done amazingly! They smell great and have just taken off in just their first year. I can't wait to see them again next year. They make very fragrant bouquets and smell great even after drying.

I love lavender and researched perennials that grow in Colorado. The plants arrived and were showing signs of root rot. I don't think lavender holds up well during the shipping process as the roots are heavily soaked. I planted them, and they all died within two weeks. To their credit, American Meadows promptly sent out replacements, but unfortunately they died as well. I then bought some from a local store and they are doing well.

To be fair, there was prolonged extreme heat and very little rain in Colorado around the time I planted them. However, I have grown many lavender plants in several climate zones and never had a problem before.

Comments about American Meadows Lavender Munstead:

I was concerned when I received the plants as the package arrived over a long weekend to my workplace -- so they looked very small and nearly dead by the time I got the box open at home. I repotted, kept moist, and hoped for the best. They did come back to life and after a couple weeks in pots I planted them in the garden where two of the three now show vigor and a few bright nearly bluish-purple blooms. The third I planted in apparently in a less ideal location and is healthy, but no blooms so far.

I love lavender and was happy with my purchase from you. Your plants are always top notch and would buy lots more if I was able to.

It's difficult to rate this plant. I bought two plants to put in 2 flower beds in front of our home. We had record breaking drought this year (2011) and we were watering to keep things alive. One plant couldn't hold on any longer. I still watered it in hope maybe the roots were still alive. The other plant did not grow much bigger (nothing did) but looks good. No flowers yet. I bought it for the fragrance and more color to our flower bed.

These plants overwintered without any care on my part. I was amazed to see them when the snow melted and revealed hardy plants with no breakage at all!

                                              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
