USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold-hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

Plant Information

Like all of the Japanese Painted Fern hybrids, this on is a close relative of our native Lady Fern, and enjoys the same shaded moist conditions. Japanese Painted Fern grows only to about 1 1/2 ft, and forms a very slowly spreading clump, making it well-suited to home gardens.

Painted of course, refers to the stem color and the multi-colored leaflets on each frond.

Wonderful colors. I cover in winter to protect. This is the second year I have had this plant. Last years order. I didn't remember ordering this plant again this year. I will check on it in the spring and get back to you.

Comments about American Meadows Japanese Painted Fern Metallicum:

I initially planted this fern in a pot and later transplanted it to a shaded spot along a fence. It grew slowly but reliably and seems healthy. I love the colors!

As a bonus, another fern is growing in the old pot, so I'll have two for one!
