Experienced gardeners have a strong love-hate relationship with violets, and it all depends on where they are planted. Of course, everybody loves the flowers. Just keep them out of your regular flower garden, and use them under trees, in front of shrubs, and other places for patches of color and borders of groundcover-like violets alone. Because they seed and spread rapidly, and if they spread throughout your other perennials, and in a year or two, you'll have a big job pulling them all out and cleaning everything up.

But just look at those flowers! Who can resist? Plant yours where you want them to spread, and you'll love them forever.

Perennials and spring-planted bulbs are shipped at the proper planting time for your hardiness zone. Perennial and spring-planted bulb orders will arrive separately from seeds. Comments about American Meadows Viola Etain:

Planted among some mature hostas for a splash of color in a shady spot. These did very well, and required little maintenance.

Comments about American Meadows Viola Etain:

I was shocked how they were packaged, they already looked like they were not going to make it. Sure enough, one by one they all wilted and were no more. What a shame, I was looking forward to seeing their little yellow faces.

Comments about American Meadows Viola Etain:

I'm new at gardening and live is zone 6a. After planting them, they continued to bloom all season. They're pretty and a little smaller than the size of a half dollar coin. They didn't spread very far (less than a foot for all the "shoots"). This past winter (2014-2015) was horribly cold and harsh. They didn't come back, which made me sad. I liked seeing them rebloom until it got cold in the fall.

This viola was the largest of the 5 plants I ordered, and, although it was still small, it grew a flower the same week I planted it outside. I'm impressed! Looking forward to many more cheerful flowers.

Planted this in 100% full shade, in a spot where nothing else has ever survived, and it is doing very well. Delicate little blooms with vivid colors are spreading. LOVE IT!

I had purchased this in a basket as an annual. I never realized it could be planted as a perennial. I put it in my garden last fall and it has come up and flowered very early this year. The color is like nothing else. I will be buying more.

                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
