USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Comments about American Meadows Ligularia The Rocket:

Far too many plants from you died shortly after growing a few weeks or never did come up in the case of bulbs such as the larkspur. Will not order from you again

Comments about American Meadows Ligularia The Rocket:

This is an incredible plant if you get the growing conditions right. We bought six of them about 4-5 years ago. Originally planted them in half sun, half shade on a slight slope. They didn't do very well there and two died. We decided to move them to a mostly shaded area where they get very limited sunlight. The area is also flat, so that the water doesn't run down the slope. The remaining four plants are now thriving! These plants need LOTS of water - I water them nearly every day, especially when it's hot. Don't let them dry out - they will not be happy! When in the right conditions they are fantastic, eye-catching plants. Of all the plants in our yard, these are the ones that get the most attention from guests.

        Grows Well in a Container

Comments about American Meadows Ligularia The Rocket:

I have successfully grown this plant and had it flower in a large plastic pot buried in my garden in 1/2 day of sun. I keep the potting mix consistently moist. I originally had it in the same pot in dappled shade, and it did OK, but didn't really thrive. At times it wilts slightly on hot days, but recovers in the evening. It has very attractive foliage, which I mostly grow it for. Likes some sun, but needs LOTS of moisture!

I lost both of these plants. Do they do best in all shade. I planted them in a garden that gets sun and shade. I will have to try planting them again.

I planted 3 in moist, shady spots. 2 died. The 3rd is getting started, and I hope in a couple of seasons will be a good addition to the garden.

        The Rocket did not perform

Comments about American Meadows Ligularia The Rocket:

I planted the Rocket in a shady place beneath a Dogwood Tree. It did not thrive, so I thought maybe it was too shady, so I moved the plants into a slightly sunnier area, but they just died. I was very disappointed. Thought about trying to get a refund, but did not bother

        Ligularis stenocephala

        By

        from vale, nc

Comments about American Meadows Ligularia The Rocket:

Upon arrival, the bulb was very wet and the outside was mushy. But I thought that if the center was still good, it might have a chance to live. However it did not and I have been meaning to contact the company about how to get it replaced. I would very much like to have this plant in my garden. Thanks

        doing well

        By

Comments about American Meadows Ligularia The Rocket:

Plant arrived healthy in beautiful shape. It is now about 18 inches to 2 ft tall. It did not flower this year. It is in a bed with mint, hydrangea and elephant ears. It is easy to grow but it would be helpful to know how long it takes to maturity and flowering. I do plan to purchase more next spring.

        Q & A

        Plant With These:

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
