The first name of this beautiful wildflower tells its story. It was discovered by John Tradescant, the British plant explorer who came to America early and and became very famous for the exotic plants of the New World that he took back home.

Spiderworts are moisture-lovers, with foliage a lot like that of an iris or Daylily, and the purple flowers are famous for having just three petals each. Today, they've been hybridized into all shades of purple, blue, pink and white, and are prized garden perennials. But many people think the original is still the most beautiful. A great plant for color in moist shade.

Comments about American Meadows Wild Spiderwort:

I love Spiderwort, and was excited to add these to my native plant garden in the fall of 2011, but sadly they never came up.

Comments about American Meadows Wild Spiderwort:

I didn't really know anything about the plant before I ordered it - the flowers are much smaller than I expected, maybe an inch or so in size, but there are also more of them than I thought - so it balances out. I'm still glad I bought it, I just need to think about moving it to a different place next year, as it didn't work as intended in my container garden.

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
