Yarrow
Famed for medicine and magic, the Yarrows are great perennial plants.
The Yarrows have one of the longest and most fascinating histories in the entire plant world. During the Middle Ages, certain perennial species were used to ward off evil spirits, and the plants were used for centuries to dress the wounds of soldiers. (The botanical name, Achillea tells you some of the history, since it echoes the Greek War Hero Achilles and his famous wounded heel.)
Nevertheless, what perennial gardeners love is the toughness of the plants and the beauty of the new multicolored perennial hybrids. Give your yarrows full, bright sun, and gritty, fast-draining soil; they love almost desert conditions. Their beautiful perennial foliage is ferny and deep green.
