Description
Have you ever seen Rain Lilies? They were probably a favorite of your grandmother's; I know they were a favorite of mine. She always had 'Rain Lilies' in the lawn at her South Florida home. This little lily (only about 10' tall) is a tropical wildflower, and hardy only in zones 7 to 10. But gardeners everywhere can plant them as annuals; they're great in patio pots. These little jewel-like flowers are a big favorite with kids.

Why 'Rain Lilies?' Because they tend to bloom after a heavy rain. In fact, they'll do it 6 or 8 times during spring, summer and fall! After a dry period, you get some soaking rain, and then when the sun comes out the next day, there they are adding brilliant color wherever you planted them. In the lawn, like fall crocus, is great, but they're also lovely at the front of the garden, in front of foundation plantings, and along walks. And in warm areas, they multiply freely. Enjoy!

I've never lived anywhere that these would grow, but I wanted something out in the lawn to bridge the gap between the spring crocus and the fall crocus. Looks like I got my wish! I planted them a few days before a big rainstorm was due- just used my hori hori to poke holes in the lawn, pushed the bulbs down, gave the lawn a sprinkling, and ignored them until the other day when I glanced out and WHEEE! Beautiful bursts of pink all over the lawn! These are a definite WIN in my book.

It's pretty, but as a beginner gardener, it's too much work. I don't really have time/skills to store and save bulbs so I definitely prefer flowers that I can just leave in the garden during the winter. This is not one of them. I would still recommend this flower to more experienced gardeners though.

I planted these along the edge of a walkway bordered by a large swath of mondo grass. These are perfect there as the foliage blends in with the grass. Then, several times during the year after a good rain, I get a surprise shot of color along the walkway! A good solution for that area.

You will like the evergreen shoots which remain while waiting for the perfect rain. Once it rains you get a "splash" of color! These blooms are short lived, but the green shoots of the plant make it a nice texture in your garden. Suggest groupings unless in a pot or planted as an accent where rain falls. Great rainy day surprises!
