Plant Information

Have you ever seen Rain Lilies? They were probably a favorite of your grandmother's; I know they were a favorite of mine. She always had 'Rain Lilies' in the lawn at her South Florida home. This little lily (only about 10' tall) is a tropical wildflower, and hardy only in zones 7 to 10. But gardeners everywhere can plant them as annuals; they're great in patio pots. These little jewel-like flowers are a big favorite with kids.

Why 'Rain Lilies?' Because they tend to bloom after a heavy rain. In fact, they'll do it 6 or 8 times during spring, summer and fall! After a dry period, you get some soaking rain, and then when the sun comes out the next day, there they are adding brilliant color wherever you planted them. In the lawn, like fall crocus, is great, but they're also lovely at the front of the garden, in front of foundation plantings, and along walks. And in warm areas, they multiply freely. Enjoy!

I've never lived anywhere that these would grow, but I wanted something out in the lawn to bridge the gap between the spring crocus and the fall crocus. Looks like I got my wish! I planted them a few days before a big rainstorm was due- just used my hori hori to poke holes in the lawn, pushed the bulbs down, gave the lawn a sprinkling, and ignored them until the other day when I glanced out and WHEEE! Beautiful bursts of pink all over the lawn! These are a definite WIN in my book.

It's pretty, but as a beginner gardener, it's too much work. I don't really have time/skills to store and save bulbs so I definitely prefer flowers that I can just leave in the garden during the winter. This is not one of them. I would still recommend this flower to more experienced gardeners though.

Comments about American Meadows Rain Lily Bulbs Mix:

I was really looking forward to a fun and unique sounding flower. It was depicted that this would often bloom after a good rain, however they never did. I only had about 4 blooms total. I planted the bulbs in fertile soil in large containers. I even asked for another bag of these, as many were molded. So in turn I have just over the 25 bulbs originally. I do not blame American Meadows for any mishap, I just don't know what happened to mine. No sign of pests or disease either.

Comments about American Meadows Rain Lily Bulbs Mix:

I ordered these rain lily bulbs specifically for a rain garden in a area where water accumulates afer a rain for a few hours to overnight.
What's great about them is I just plant and let them go. They will proliferate on their own and every bloom produces charcoal like seeds I let fall into the rain garden bed.
Flowering is intermittent and triggered by rain. Luckily I live in Florida where rain is routine.
Only disappointment is not every bulb grew; just 18 of 25, but still not a bad result and they will spread themselves.

Comments about American Meadows Rain Lily Bulbs Mix:

I thought the photos were so pretty, and the customer reviews were enticing. So, when I showed them to my husband, he said he would like to buy me some for Valentine's Day 2013. I eagerly accepted the offer and bought 4 bags. We live in hardiness zone 6, bordering 7, and I had no intention of digging them up and bringing them in every winter. Still, having the opportunity to enjoy them all summer long appealed to me a lot more than cut flowers that would soon fade after Valentine's Day. I planted them numerous places – at the edges of flower gardens, and some right in the grass where I knew I could avoid mowing. (I dug those holes with a cordless drill and an auger attachment to avoid disturbing the lawn any more than necessary.) Over the summer, the plants grew. They produced long grass-like blades, maroon at the base, and tapering green toward the top. The growth initially reminded me of spring onions, and later they looked a bit like spider plants. We had a summer with more rainfall than usual, and we had plenty of sun. I expected blooms. However, not a single bloom from a single planted bulb all summer long. It is October now, and we are having cold temperatures at night. Other non-hardy, tender plants are withering. I still have no intention of going around through my gardens and grass to dig these bulbs up. That was never my plan. So, for me, this purchase was a waste of money. These bulbs did not meet the product description, even for a single summer, and there was nothing in the product details to alert me to that possibility. I did not want to give the rain lily bulbs a single star based on this experience, but the product review page requires at least one, and so with this constraint I have given them a single star.

I planted these along the edge of a walkway bordered by a large swath of mondo grass. These are perfect there as the foliage blends in with the grass. Then, several times during the year after a good rain, I get a surprise shot of color along the walkway! A good solution for that area.

Comments about American Meadows Rain Lily Bulbs Mix:

You will like the evergreen shoots which remain while waiting for the perfect rain. Once it rains you get a "splash" of color! These blooms are short lived, but the green shoots of the plant make it a nice texture in your garden. Suggest groupings unless in a pot or planted as an accent where rain falls. Great rainy day surprises!

                              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
