USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

This is far and away the most popular fall-flowering crocus, and here's why. In recent years, the spice, saffron, has become increasingly expensive, (often as high as $70 oz.) so more and more gardeners are growing their own. These beautiful purple crocus will open and offer you pure saffron on each flower's 'stigmas.' It's easy to harvest, and fresher than any you can buy.

Harvesting Saffron: When the flowers are fresh, simply remove the bright red stigmas you'll see in each flower's center; they carry the saffron spice. You can use it immediately in the fresh form, or dry it for later use. To dry your saffron, simply spread the red stigmas out for several days on a paper towel in a warm dry place. Once they're dry, store them in an air-tight container in a cool place, and use the saffron whenever you like.

Growing Fall-Flowering Crocus and Colchicum These two groups of bulbs are almost like magic. You plant them in late summer, and they bloom within a few weeks. We ship them, along with Bearded Irises, in August, earlier than other fall bulbs, with instructions to plant right away. They're great in the ground or in patio pots---anywhere you want to add jewel-like color for your fall garden. In just weeks, you'll see them poking up through the ground, and before you know it they're in bloom, just when everything else in your garden is almost finished! It's a wonderful finale of color that just won't happen without these beauties.

If you've never planted them before, you'll find the regular 'fall-flowering crocus', including C. sativus,, the saffron crocus, much like spring bloomers (about 4-5 inches tall). Colchicums are different, since every bulb (they're larger than the regular crocus bulbs) produces a whole bouquet of flowers. One Colchicum bulb will send up between 5 and 10 stems, and each one will soon bear a flower.

So plant either or both, and enjoy some brilliant spring color in your garden when you need it the most--in fall!'

How to Plant Fall Flowering Crocus

Fall Flowering Crocus create quick, delightful beauty in the fall garden just weeks after being planted. We ship them in August, along with the Bearded Iris, to be planted right away. They're great in the ground or in patio pots---anywhere you want to add jewel-like color for your fall garden. In just days, you'll see them poking up through the ground, and before you know it they're in bloom, just when everything else in your garden is almost finished! It's a wonderful finale of color that just won't happen without these beauties.

How to Plant:
1. Plant bulbs as soon as possible after receiving them.
2. Read the label to see how deep to plant your crocus – This may vary for different varieties of bulbs.
3. Find a sunny spot in your garden that has good drainage – Crocus bulbs do not like very moist soil. You can also plant Fall Flowering Crocus in patio pots.
4. Dig a hole according to the depth on your package. Add organic compost if available.
5. Plant bulb pointy side up. Don’t worry if you can’t decipher which end this is – The flower will find its way up.
6. Back-fill with soil and water thoroughly to remove air pockets.

You should see sprouts within a week or so and blooms in just several weeks!

If you are planting Saffron Crocus bulbs to harvest the stamens to cook with, you will want to do this once they begin blooming.

Once they're dry, store them in an air-tight container in a cool, dark place, and use the saffron whenever you like.

These are great for the Fall garden. At a time when all else ends I can still look forward to a last burst of color. I've never seen these around here and they grow with no effort. I planted these in late summer in Ohio and watered. They are beautiful and very easy to grow.

I planted some of the bulbs in ground as instructed and I was excited to see the plant growing, but only one flower bloomed and it quickly died.
I hoped some of the bulbs I put in containers would fair better but they didn't bloom at all. I guess my thumb isn't as green as I hoped. The plant looks like I planted chives, since it has no flowers. Maybe they will bloom next year.

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

This was my first attempt at growing saffron crocus and they took longer to come up than I was expecting. My issue was not the bulbs but the watering system I was using. I changed that and they emerged just fine and I had a nice crop. The bulbs have also multiplied and I hope to divide them next season so they will spread out even more. I was a little concerned after reading all the negative reviews but I like to give things a try for my self and I am glad I did.

Never regret ordering 50 or so of these beautiful, fall blooming, low to the ground crocus! This is a follow up to my other review, with a photo of one of the blooms. Up close, these flowers look like stain glass or intricate art. I love the pink-purple color contrasted with the yellow and red, as well as the woodgrain type veining in the petals. The leaves are also attractive!

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

I planted these in late summer/early fall, just when American Meadows was shipping them. I PLANTED ALONGSIDE spring and blooming bulbs such as spring crocus and allium in order to "stack the deck" and increase months of the year that there would be flowers in that spot. WHERE I PLANTED: In the lifeless perimeter of dirt right by the house where grass won't really grow due to lack of water. And under some slatted wood lawn furniture (partial shade in both spots, although I believe they could have taken full sun). OUR TERRAIN: zone 7, 14in precipitation annually, 5000ft elevation, western high desert, soil is silt and fine red sand. WHAT HAPPENED: I did water, but I'm not sure that I needed to. It's impossible to overwater here since the soil doesn't retain moisture, so I think it was no harm, no foul. I didn't amend or fertilize in any way. The very active ground squirrels left them alone. We had a very long, late and warm summer, so they didn't bloom until very late in October. I almost gave up on them! But then, every place that I had planted a bulb, 1 or 2 flowers came up and they are GORGEOUS! I'm not much of a cook, so I gave the saffron away to VERY appreciative friends and neighbors. Much to my delight, the flowers are so low to the ground that end of season bumblebees, who were too tired at that point to fly well, were able to crawl from flower to flower for their last supper. It is now almost January and the grass is mostly dormant, but the grass or sedge like crocus foliage is still green and attractive. The flowers themselves lasted for a couple of weeks. Short but spectacular!

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

Last fall, I got 30 bulbs and planted them in pots as I red that when they are dormant, they should not be watered. Planting in pots assures that I can keep them dry in summer months when they go dormant. All of them bloomed in a month from planting and I got good amt of Saffron from them.
They multiplied a lot and I have repotted them in other pots this year. The smaller bulbs may not bloom this year, which is fine, I can be patient and wait for another year when they will bloom.

Although the bulbs were healthy, grew well which I was very pleased with, I harvested the stigmas as directed but do not detect any aroma from them so I don't think they will provide flavor. Very disappointed. I may be wrong about no aroma, no flavor, which is why I gave it a 3 rating. I would love to have any knowledgeable people let me know if I'm wrong.

I received and planted 30 of these bulbs in mid September in tilled soil with 50lbs of sand added. It is mid November and all the bulbs have sprouted. Most have sprouted with multiple shoots. It appears to be mid flower season. So far there have been 17 flowers and there are at least 11 more on the way, hopefully with more to come.

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

Planted my first set of corms in September in pots. Now, mid November, I have these beautiful flowers coming up. The second set was planted in the garden ground, in a very dry patch. those are just breaking the ground now; I put about 50 in that spot. I expect that in a few weeks those will be blooming too.

I'm very much pleased with how these turned out. I must caution folks about how to treat them when first planted.

Put them in the ground, water them ONCE, then leave them alone. Don't keep watering them, don't let the sprinklers water them, or the bulbs will rot. These can go great in waste areas that are perpetually dry and don't get sprinkler water. In fall when the temperature drops, that's their cue to start up. We are finally getting some rain, but by now they're already sprouting up, so there's no issue with rot.

I do have one friend who planted some in September, but hers haven't come up. She claims to have followed the directions, but I have to wonder, because these stayed in the ground until the temperature turned, then squirted right up.

The cat keeps messing with them, I think because the waste ground I selected is his favorite spot to rub dirt all over himself. I think that will stop once the greens sprout up. He also intimidates the squirrels but those buggers are relentless. I did move the pots close to the front door so I can admire the blooms better, plus the squirrels don't generally get that close.

When the greens eventually die down that's the sign they're dormant. They should NOT be watered, they should be left alone. Come fall, they'll come back up on their own.

I got the bulbs late in September. Called the helpline and they told me to "plant now!" Thanks for your advice. I planted them and they are breaking ground now (November 6). I hope that if they get frosted out that they will survive to bloom next year.
                                        Thanks for help!

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

Received Saffron Crocus bulbs in a timely manner, bulbs looked OK, planted immediately (SEPT.) in an open fertile well drained garden area where other plants are doing great. To date not one Crocus has emerged. I've spent over 30 years advising home owners and professional nurserymen on home landscape problems. This is the first time I've ever had luck this bad with any bulb.
                                          Any thoughts regarding these results?

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

Bought over 75 bulbs. I must say I am impressed. This is my first time growing saffron. Almost all of the bulbs now have leaves (Grassy like) and i did wait to plant them (not by choice) since I was out of town for almost 2 weeks after they arrived. Some have up to 4 sprouts from a single bulb, most have at least 2. Gave about 15 to my in laws. They also all also grew perfectly in large flower pots with standard potting soil outside in Chantilly, VA. Looking forward to the blooming in the next 1-2 weeks as we are almost there. I did use coconut fiber as my soil/medium for growth in my outdoor garden area and nothing but straight water from the tap/hose.

I bought 2 bags of bulbs and planted them in 2 large pots within a day of receiving them (late August). It's mid Oct and I'm still waiting to see any sign of growth. Not promising.

The bulbs have not begun to grow. This maybe due to the weather not becoming fall weather we are still in the 90's. This morning I saw something break through the ground. Will have to keep watching to finish review.

The bulbs have not sprouted so I dug them up and most have not have rotted (about 8 out of the 30 rotted) but the others have not started to root either. Has been over 7 weeks since I planted them and nothing. Still waiting to see if anything comes up. Soil is moist not wet. I planted them in containers so I can move them in case of rain as well so I am not sure what the issue is. Will wait a few more weeks and see what happens. Was excited to grow these but no so much anymore :>(.....

                                                      Plant With These:

                                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
