USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

About the Sedums: These perennial plants enjoy gritty, fast-draining soil, and must have full hot sun. They're really desert plants, so give them sharp drainage. (Sedums are often called Succulents, due to their thickened moisture-retentive leaves, and yes, the short ones include the famous Hen and Chicks from grandmothers garden.)

Once Sedums are established, you've assured yourself of loads of perennial interest for the later months when most garden flowers are gone.

Comments about American Meadows Sedum Angelina:

Talk about no maintenance, pest free, year round interest and add drought tolerant what more can you ask for? Angelina is a spreading groundcover that sports lime green color as the weather warms and really brightens any spot in your yard. Cool weather turns it a burnished copper red color stunning in the winter landscape. I planted it in an urn shaped pot and it quickly filled in to spill over the sides, looks gorgeous. Highly recommend this tough perennial that thrives on neglect.

I purchased these to put in the bucket of a well and these combined with 2 other succulent plants was perfect for the effect that I wanted. They were all small, but have a lot of character.

Comments about American Meadows Sedum Angelina:

it's taken awhile, but these are starting to spread through a rock garden. I might have been overwatering at first, but they've survived the drought, and I suspect will continue to fill in next year.

Comments about American Meadows Sedum Angelina:

I absolutely love the colors of this plant. In summer its a pretty yellow-green, then in fall turns a mix of oranges and red that really stands out. If your winters are mild it will continue its show through spring. Even during a cold winter this plant looked good next to my walkway.

          Q & A

          Plant With These:

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
