USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Comments about American Meadows Wild Iris Katharine Hodgkin - Bag of 20:

These irises were beautiful and popped up very early in the Spring. Because I had never planted these, I assumed they were the same height as other irises even though the description clear says otherwise, oops! Regardless, these little guys were cute, though I need to find another place to move them for next year so they can be on full display.

Comments about American Meadows Wild Iris Katharine Hodgkin - Bag of 20:

These just bloomed in our garden here in Vermont (end of March). They are so beautiful and such a nice burst of color during a time when nothing else is in bloom. They're holding their own pretty well out there even with our very low nighttime temperatures! Would definitely buy more of these little irises.

      Q & A

      Plant With These:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
