One of the world's most popular herbs, thyme is a must-have for flavorful meat dishes and stews.

Plant Information

The scent and flavor of thyme makes it an essential part of recipes for almost everything--fish, chowders, sauces, stuffings, soups, meats and poultry.

It's an herb with a glorious history, used in ancient rituals to give courage to men going off to war. A Roman favorite, it was introduced to most of Europe by their early conquests.

As a culinary flavoring, it's famous for adding great taste to lamb, but is used for almost any meat. Today, thyme is widely used in European and Middle Eastern cooking, so it is an essential herb for any gourmet cook.

When and Where to Plant: Select sunny location with well-drained soil and sow seed after last frost. Cultivate soil and enrich with vegetable food. For earlier harvest, start seeds indoors. Firm soil over seed.
Care: Keep clipped to encourage bushy growth. Do not water.
Harvesting: Pick leaves as need to use fresh. For drying, cut stems back at time of flowering and dry in dark, ventilated place.

Comments about American Meadows Thyme Seeds:

I live in a rural area with rocky clay soil and am trying to replace a large front lawn that is weedy and unattractive. I broadcast thyme seed across an area between several oak trees and it's taken off nicely. We can even mow it in the areas where it's still mixed with grass and it's fine. It's been a few years now and the entire front of the yard is covered in fragrant thyme.

Comments about American Meadows Thyme Seeds:

I bought this seed in bulk and spread over a considerable bare patch in my yard. It came up beautifully in rocky, clay soil that gets blasted all day with the sun. It spread quickly, and has crowded out most of the grass and weeds. It's attractive, and smells marvelous when walked on! One final note - it survived our severe drought this year with no watering, while everything else withered away.

It never grew past a seedling. If it grew at all it didn't grow past maturity.

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
