Plant Information

This will be the biggest thing in your garden – Maybe even the biggest in the neighborhood! The Upright Elephant Ear quickly shoots up big, green spears that unfurl into some of the largest leaves in the plant kingdom. In good soil, the leaves can reach 4 or even 5 feet across. Just one big bulb will create a large leafy plant, like a tropical fountain of green.

Gardeners love this exotic favorite as a screen or as a background for smaller plants and flowers. Always a highlight in any garden, and very easy to grow and care for. Our bulbs are top size, which means up to 10 inches in circumference! Complete planting instructions are included.

Comments about American Meadows Upright Elephant Ears:

I just opened my box from American Meadows. This is the first time I have made a purchase from them. Included were some upright elephant ears. I ordered these because the bulbs were supposed to be huge, "up to 10 inches." This sounded so much larger than the ones I saw in a local big box store so I ordered them. Turns out they are maybe 4", about half the size of the one at the local store and cost almost 2 and a half times as much. DISAPPOINTED. Hopefully I won't be disappointed in the plants as they grow.

Comments about American Meadows Upright Elephant Ears:

I was a little worried about planting an elephant ear in my yard, here in the canyons of sunny California, thinking the dry, summer temperatures would kill this tropical. I planted it in the spring and thought it may have rotted, as it took almost 6 months for the first little leaf to break the soil. But WOW, once it emerged, it never stopped! I cannot believe the size of it now, a year later. By far, the most growth I have ever seen from a plant in such little time. It completely filled in the empty bed I placed it in for that very reason! And now it's sent secondary clusters of new shoots around the entire perimeter of the main base! The only downfall I see, is that I may have to eliminate some of them, if this thing keeps going the way it is. It's a VERY happy plant! I love it and it is a show-stopper in my front garden. Just about every visitor to my home comments on how fabulous it is. I wish I had room for more Elephant Ears. This one is a winner!

              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
