Catnip or "Catmint" is world famous as a kitty cat delight. People also love the blue flowers.

Be sure to include this one for your cat. He or she will love the leaves, you'll enjoy the beautiful flowers. One of the easiest herbs to grow. Dependably spreading perennial.

When and Where to Plant: Select a full sun to partial shade location and sow seed after last frost. Catnip will grow in most soil types but prefers a sandy, well drained soil. Keep soil moist until the seeds germinate.
Care: Pinch plants often while they're growing, to obtain dense, well-shaped plants.
Harvesting: The herb is harvested just before flowering in middle to late summer on a dry sunny day and in late morning when all dew is gone. Drying should be done carefully. Cut off the whole plant at the base and hang it upside down as soon as possible in a dark, dry, well-ventilated place to minimize loss of volatile oil, or you can dry in an oven at 150 degrees Fahrenheit.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
