USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

Black-seeded Simpson Lettuce gives you crisp leaf lettuce for salads all summer and into fall. As you cut, more leaves appear.

When and Where to Plant: Lettuce is a cool-weather crop. Select a sunny location, cultivate and fertilize soil with vegetable food. Plant in early spring as soon as soil can be worked. Sow seed sparingly, firming soil over row. Repeat at 2 week intervals as long as weather is cool – spring and fall. For earliest crop start seeds indoors..
Care: Water lightly and regularly. Protect from pests.
Harvesting: Pull entire plant or cut off 1-2"/3-5 cm. above ground.

Comments about American Meadows Heirloom Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce Seeds:

direct sow in May. I planted too many because I didn't expect them all to come up (but they did). We had salads all summer, the plants just bolted about 2 weeks ago. A little "softer" than expected, but very tasty.

Comments about American Meadows Heirloom Black Seeded Simpson Lettuce Seeds:

Fence it in! Never got a single taste of this lettuce, even though it grew profusely throughout the spring! I did a raised salad bed- put in some already-started spinach and red lettuce and then scattered these seeds throughout. I thought I was growing a living salad for myself. Silly me! The seedlings were about four inches tall, and looking really good, but when I went out to check them the next day, they, along with the spinach, had been mown down all the way to the soil. I watered, they came back! I made a make-shift screen to keep my nighttime diners away and all seemed well until I came out to discover the screen on the ground and the entire bed chewed up. Next year, I'm doing fencing with a bird net over the top, but I'll definitely try these seeds again.

      Q & A

      Plant With These:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
