Plant Information

"Mesclun" salads are very fashionable today, and for good reason. The varied "young greens" in our mesclun mix are delicious, varied, and always super-nutrituous. Included are baby leaf lettuce plus mild and spicy mustard greens in various shapes and colors. Best of all, they grow quickly, and can be harvested all summer and into fall. The name "mesclun" comes from the French word, mescla which simply means "mix."

When and Where to Plant: Select a location in full sun or light afternoon shade. Cultivate and fertilize soil with vegetable food. Mesclun is a cool weather crop, so plant in spring after chance of heavy frost has passed. Repeat at two week intervals as long as weather is cool - spring and fall. For earliest crop, start seeds indoors.
Care: Thin young seedlings, transplanting strongest to other locations. Water lightly and regularly. Protect from pests.
Harvesting: Pick a few outer leaves, one at a time. Harvest entire head when center feels firm.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
