"Mesclun" salads are very fashionable today, and for good reason. The varied "young greens" in our mesclun mix are delicious, varied, and always super-nutrituous. Included are baby leaf lettuce plus mild and spicy mustard greens in various shapes and colors. Best of all, they grow quickly, and can be harvested all summer and into fall. The name "mesclun" comes from the French word, mescla
which simply means "mix."
When and Where to Plant: Select a location in full sun or light afternoon
shade. Cultivate and fertilize soil with vegetable food. Mesclun
is a cool weather crop, so plant in spring after chance of heavy frost
has passed. Repeat at two week intervals as long as weather is cool -
spring and fall. For earliest crop, start seeds indoors.
Care: Thin young seedlings, transplanting strongest to other locations.
Water lightly and regularly. Protect from pests.
Harvesting: Pick a few outer leaves, one at a time. Harvest entire
head when center feels firm.
