USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Zones 1 - 10

Plant Information

Home gardeners love "Black Beauty" eggplants since they produce dependably and more quickly than some others. This is the shiny, medium-sized deep purple one that's perfect for all eggplant recipes.

When and Where to Plant: Start seeds indoors or in a hotbed 8-10 weeks before night temperatures warm. For later crop start seeds outdoors in warm and sunny location after weather warms. Cultivate deeply and enrich with vegetable food and organic matter. Firm soil over seed.
Care: Keep soil moist, weed free and feed every 4-6 weeks.
Harvesting: Pick when glossy and dark purple. Skin should not spring back when pressed with thumb.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
