A big favorite in Eastern Europe, and famous everywhere as the best spice for bean dishes. Annual.

SKU 1SAVG
Summer Savory is the big favorite of the "savory group" of herbs, and is a staple of cooking in Eastern Europe. There, it is always used in stuffing, sausage, and many other meat dishes and stews. It's also recommended for egg dishes, and is always the No. 1 recommendation for use with beans. The plants stay short, and are easy to grow, easy to harvest.

When and Where to Plant: Select a sunny location with well-drained soil and sow seed after last frost. Cultivate soil and enrich with vegetable food. Sow seeds on the soil surface since they need light to germinate. Press lightly into the soil.
Care: Responds well to trimming.
Harvesting: You can start to harvest lightly after 6 weeks and normally after 10 weeks. Cut down to the ground before frost in the fall and hang to dry.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
