USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

"Sugar Ann" peas are famous for their sweet taste and great uses as "snap peas." Perfect in salads and for snacking, but also great for cooked dishes.

When and Where to Plant: Select a sunny location and plant in very early spring as soon as soil can be worked. Cultivate soil and enrich with vegetable food and organic matter. Continue planting at 2 week intervals until midspring. Plant again in late summer for late fall crop. Firm soil over seed.
Care: Provide support for tall growing varieties. Water by soaking soil to reduce danger of disease.
Harvesting: Pick when seeds have enlarged in the pod, while still bright green. Hold vine while picking to avoid tearing it.

Comments about American Meadows Sugar Ann Dwarf Pea Seeds:

For some reason these peas just didn't grow well. Germination was fine but about 80% of the plants were stunted and the vines never got above 6-8 inches tall. Just a few feet away, pole peas planted in identical conditions did great, so I don't think it's gardener error or something wrong with conditions. Tried replanting twice with the same result. Maybe just a bad batch of seed? The 20% that did grow into decent vines produced pretty well.

Comments about American Meadows Sugar Ann Dwarf Pea Seeds:

I used seeds in small containers. Each and every plant gave me pea pods. This is an excellent product and I enjoyed the peas.

      Best Uses

      • Fresh off the vine
      • Stir-fry

Comments about American Meadows Sugar Ann Dwarf Pea Seeds:

The best thing about these is the bush size. My sugar-snap pea vines are eight feet tall, but the Sugar Anns, which planted right along the driveway, are nice, compact little bushes. I did stake them to keep them up off the ground so the snails can't get to the leaves, which seems to have worked, but if you don't have snail problems I see no reason to stake them at all.
Having the low vines right at the garden's edge means we're constantly snacking on them. Every few weeks, as one set of plants dies, I go out and plant a couple more seeds, and every single one seems to sprout!

      Q & A

      Plant With These:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
